AI Optimization, or AI Overviews, depending on who you ask
This is the one to be careful with. AIO is currently used to mean at least three different things, by different people, often in the same conversation. Anyone selling you AIO without first defining it is worth a follow up question.
Unlike the other four, AIO is used to describe several different things. That is not a criticism of anyone using it. It is a reason to ask what is included before comparing two quotes.
The three ways the term gets used.
AI Overviews
Google's own feature, the AI summary at the top of results. Under this reading AIO is a place, not a practice, and optimizing for it is what most people call GEO.
AI Optimization
A broad umbrella covering GEO plus chatbots, AI agents and any future machine reader. Under this reading it is a superset of GEO rather than a different discipline.
AI assisted optimization
Using AI tools to do the SEO work: research, auditing, content planning. This is about how the work gets done, not what it is aimed at. A completely different claim from the other two.
Two agencies, one word, different products
One agency quotes for AIO and means structured data so Google's AI summary quotes you correctly. Another quotes for AIO and means they use AI tools to write your content faster. Both invoices say AIO. One is a visibility service and the other is a production method. Neither is wrong. They are just not the same purchase.
The business case.
It matters because you cannot compare two quotes for a thing that has not been defined. The useful move is not to avoid the term. It is to ask which of the three is being sold, and to get the answer written into the scope.
Buying it as though it were a settled discipline. Ask for the deliverable, not the acronym.
How this compares.
Each of these aims at something different. The comparison page puts all five side by side.
