Local giving works when local is the whole argument.
The Escondido Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that turns donations from Escondido residents and businesses into classroom funding across all 25 Escondido Union School District schools. It competes for the same dollar as national education charities with far larger budgets. Its one real advantage is proximity, and the old site was not making that case.

The situation
A donor choosing between a national education charity and a local foundation is really asking one question. Does more of my money reach a child if I give here instead of there.
A national brand wins that comparison on recognition alone. A local foundation can only win it on proximity, and only if it says so before the donor has to work it out for themselves.
The old site led with the organization rather than with the gift. The phrase 25 schools, which is the entire scope of the work, did not appear until you went looking for it.
What we found
The strongest sentence available was not about the foundation at all. It was about how far a dollar travels. Raised in Escondido, granted in Escondido.
Three objections stop a first time local donor. Is this tax deductible, does the money actually stay local, and how much of it disappears into overhead. The foundation had a genuinely good answer to all three, including an all volunteer board, and not one of them was on the homepage.
Escondido Union serves a community with a large Spanish speaking population. A single language site was quietly excluding families who are also donors, volunteers and advocates.
The existing identity was warm and legible and did not need replacing. This was a repositioning more than a redraw, so the lightbulb mark stayed and everything else was rebuilt around it.
The decision
Lead with the moment rather than the mission statement. Fund the day a child decides they love school is what a donor is actually buying, and it is a good deal more specific than supporting education.
Answer the three objections in a strip directly under the buttons, before the donor has to hunt. Tax deductible. Raised and granted in Escondido. Run by an all volunteer board.
Put the scope above the navigation. Serving all 25 Escondido Union schools sits at the top of every page, so the size of the work is settled before anyone scrolls.
Treat the language switch as a primary control in the header, not a footer afterthought. For this community it is navigation, not an accessibility checkbox.
Bring giving on site, and give the undecided a second, softer path. See what your gift funds does more work here than a second donate button ever would.
What we chose not to do. Trade offs are the interesting part of any project, so we publish ours.
- We did not use distressed or pitying photography of children. The promise on this site is a good day at school, and the imagery had to look like one or the headline would read as false.
- We did not build a peer to peer fundraising platform. It came up, and it is a real maintenance burden that would have outlived the volunteer enthusiasm for running it.
- We did not publish a percentage to programs figure. The foundation can support one, but overhead ratios move year to year, and a number that quietly goes stale does more damage than no number.
The work in numbers.
These describe what the project produced rather than what it earned. We do not publish performance figures a client has not approved, so where those exist they appear here, and where they do not, this is what we can say honestly.
