Why your site is slow, in the usual order
Speed is usually discussed as a ranking factor. The larger cost is simpler than that: on a phone, on mobile data, in a car park, people leave.

The usual causes, in order
- Enormous images. A photo straight from a phone can be five megabytes. On a page with eight of them, nothing else matters until this is fixed.
- Too many plugins loading on every page, including ones used on one page only.
- A page builder loading its entire library whether or not the page uses it.
- No caching, so every visitor causes the whole page to be assembled from scratch.
- Slow hosting, which is real and is usually the fourth problem rather than the first.

- Run the site through a public speed test on mobile, not desktop.
- Look at the largest files it reports. It is almost always images.
- Resize and compress those. On most small business sites this alone is the majority of the improvement.

- A page that shows something useful within about two and a half seconds on a mobile connection.
- Nothing jumping around as it loads, which is a separate and very irritating problem.
- A phone number that is tappable before the rest of the page has finished.

- Buying a faster hosting plan while still serving unoptimized images.
- Adding a performance plugin on top of the problem rather than removing the cause.
