Backups, and the test almost nobody runs
A backup you have never restored from is not a backup. It is a hope with a monthly fee attached. The test takes thirty minutes and is the most useful half hour available to you.

What a real backup includes
- The files, which is the theme, the plugins and every upload.
- The database, which is the content, the pages, the orders and the customers. Files without the database restore an empty site.
- A copy stored somewhere other than the server it came from. A backup on the same machine dies with it.
How it works
Why sync is not backup
- Cloud storage syncs. That is its job. If something is deleted or encrypted, that change syncs perfectly to every copy.
- A backup is a version from a point in time that today cannot alter. That is a different thing and it is the thing you need.
What to check
How far back is far enough
- Most compromises are discovered days or weeks after they happen.
- Thirty days of retention is a reasonable floor for a small business site. Seven days is common and frequently not enough.
- Check what yours is. Most owners have never asked.
Worth knowing
The test
- Ask whoever runs your site to restore one file, or a copy of the whole site to a staging address.
- Time it. The number is your actual recovery time, which is a different figure from whatever the plan says.
- We have found backups running perfectly for two years that could not be restored, because nobody had ever tried.
